The History of Stoicism

Stoicism is a philosophical school that originated in ancient Greece in the 3rd century BCE. Its teachings have endured for more than two thousand years and continue to influence modern thought and culture. The word "stoic" has even become a part of everyday language, describing someone who remains calm and unemotional in the face of adversity.

Origins of Stoicism

The founder of Stoicism is considered to be Zeno of Citium, a merchant who arrived in Athens and began to study philosophy under the guidance of the Cynic philosopher Crates. After Crates' death, Zeno continued to develop his own ideas and eventually founded the Stoic school of philosophy.

The name "Stoicism" is derived from the Stoa Poikile, a painted colonnade in Athens where Zeno and his followers would meet to discuss their ideas. The Stoics believed that reason was the highest virtue and that one should strive to live in accordance with nature.
